Claude Code usage limits: 5-hour and weekly resets

How Claude Code's 5-hour session limit and weekly limit work on Pro and Max, when each one resets, and how to see both before you run out.

The short answer

Claude Code on a Pro or Max plan has two limits that run at the same time: a session limit on a rolling five-hour window, and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. Whichever runs out first stops you, and both are shared with your claude.ai and Claude Desktop usage.

At a glance

Session limitRolling five-hour window. Max 5x gives five times Pro's per-session allowance, Max 20x gives 20 times.
Weekly limitApplies across all models and resets at a fixed weekly time assigned to your account, not on a rolling seven days.
Model limitsA separate Opus or Sonnet limit can also be reached; switching model family with /model lets you keep working.
Shared withclaude.ai and Claude Desktop. All activity in these tools counts against the same limits.
Plan pricesPro $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200.

The five-hour session window

Anthropic describes the session limit as a rolling five-hour window. Every prompt you send in Claude Code, and every message in the claude.ai chat or Claude Desktop, draws from the same session allowance. When the window rolls over, the allowance is available again.

The size of the allowance depends on the plan. Max 5x is defined as five times the Pro plan's per-session usage and Max 20x as 20 times. Anthropic does not publish a fixed number of prompts, because a long agentic task with large files uses far more of the allowance than a short question.

Team and Enterprise seats work the same way, with an allowance per seat that resets on a rolling five-hour window and a weekly window. A Team Premium seat carries five times the usage of a Standard seat.

The weekly limit and its fixed reset time

Anthropic added weekly limits on top of session limits in August 2025. The current help pages describe one weekly limit that applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. It is not a rolling seven days, so the reset lands on the same weekday and hour every week.

Claude Code can also tell you that you have hit your Opus limit or your Sonnet limit. That is narrower than the plan limit: the docs say you can switch to a model from the other family with /model and continue, while the overall weekly limit still counts everything.

How to see where you stand

Inside Claude Code, the /usage command shows your plan usage bars and the reset time of each window. On claude.ai, Settings, then Usage, shows the same plan limits. The dollar figure Claude Code shows for a session is meant for API users and is not relevant to what a subscriber pays.

For a number that stays on screen, Claude Code passes rate-limit data to its status line for Pro and Max subscribers: the used percentage of the five-hour and seven-day windows and the time each one resets. That is the source everyaitoken reads, so the limits and exact reset times sit in your menu bar and in desktop widgets. The guide to seeing your limit early walks through the setup.

FAQ

Questions

When does the Claude Code 5-hour limit reset?

It runs on a rolling five-hour window, so the allowance comes back when that window rolls over. The exact reset time for your account appears in /usage inside Claude Code and in the status line data Claude Code passes to tools such as everyaitoken.

When does the Claude Code weekly limit reset?

At a fixed time assigned to your account, once a week. It is not a rolling seven-day window, so the reset falls on the same weekday and hour each week. /usage shows the exact time.

Does using claude.ai count against my Claude Code limit?

Yes. Anthropic states that all activity in Claude Code, claude.ai, and Claude Desktop counts against the same usage limits, so a long chat session reduces what is left for coding.

How much more usage does Max give than Pro?

Max 5x gives five times the Pro plan's per-session allowance for $100 a month, and Max 20x gives 20 times for $200 a month. The weekly limit scales with the plan as well. To decide whether the upgrade pays, read Is Claude Max worth it.
