The short answer
ccusage is a free, open-source command-line tool that reports token usage and cost from the local logs of Claude Code, Codex, and many other agents, and for many developers it is all they need. The alternatives differ mainly in form and focus: Claude Code Usage Monitor is a live terminal view, CodexBar is a free macOS menu bar app for limits across many providers, and everyaitoken is a paid Mac app built around cache accounting and desktop widgets.
At a glance
| ccusage | Free, MIT licensed CLI. Daily, weekly, monthly, session, and 5-hour block reports for many agents. |
|---|---|
| Claude Code Usage Monitor | Free, MIT licensed Python terminal monitor for Claude Code with burn rate and limit forecasts. |
| CodexBar | Free, MIT licensed macOS menu bar app with session and weekly limits and reset countdowns for many providers. |
| everyaitoken | $9 once, macOS. Six tools, limits for Claude Code and Codex, cache savings net of write premiums, 17 widgets. |
ccusage: the reference CLI
ccusage reads the usage data your coding agents already write to disk and turns it into reports by day, week, month, and session. Its blocks report groups Claude Code usage into five-hour windows, and a status line mode is in beta. It now covers Codex directly, along with OpenCode, Gemini CLI, and many other agents, and it runs anywhere Node runs with a single npx command.
If you live in the terminal, want reports on demand, and do not need a graphical view, ccusage is hard to argue against: it is free, open source, and actively maintained.
Live views: Claude Code Usage Monitor and CodexBar
Claude Code Usage Monitor keeps a live terminal view of your current session, with burn rate and a forecast of when you will reach the limit. Version 4 can read the official rate limit data Claude Code passes to its status line, and falls back to labeled local estimates.
CodexBar is a free menu bar app for macOS 14 and later, with a Linux app and a CLI. It shows session, weekly, and monthly limits with reset countdowns and credit balances for Codex, Claude, and a long list of other providers, using sign-ins, CLIs, or API keys you already have.
Where everyaitoken differs
everyaitoken is narrower in coverage, with six tools rather than dozens, and it costs $9 once. Its focus is the money side of caching: it prices cache reads, 5-minute writes, and 1-hour writes at each provider's rates and shows what caching saved or cost after write premiums, including when the result is negative. The guide to when caching costs more explains why that matters.
It also keeps reported spend from Cursor and OpenRouter separate from token estimates, supports several accounts per tool, and puts the numbers in 17 native desktop widgets as well as the menu bar. Usage history stays on your Mac, and prompts and code are not stored.
How to choose
Pick ccusage for free on-demand reports in the terminal. Pick CodexBar for a free menu bar view of limits across many providers. Pick Claude Code Usage Monitor for a live terminal forecast of one Claude Code session. Pick everyaitoken if you want cache savings and overhead in dollars, desktop widgets, and Claude Code and Codex limits beside the costs of six tools. Several of these work side by side, since each only reads data the tools already keep.

FAQ
Questions
Is ccusage free?
Yes. ccusage is open source under the MIT license and runs with npx, bunx, or Nix wherever Node is available.
Does ccusage support Codex?
Yes. Codex reports are part of the main ccusage package now; the separate Codex package is deprecated in favor of it.
Is there a menu bar app for Claude Code limits?
Yes. CodexBar is a free macOS menu bar app that shows Claude and Codex limits among many providers, and everyaitoken shows Claude Code and Codex limits in the menu bar and in desktop widgets.
Why pay for a tracker when free ones exist?
Only if the extra features matter to you. everyaitoken's case rests on cache accounting net of write premiums, native widgets, and separate reported spend; if you need token counts and limits alone, the free tools cover that well.
